This week you won’t want to miss Around Midnight at Teatro Puccini, on Friday, August 29. On the occasion of the practice of the Young Talents National Jazz Orchestra, composed of the best students of the Italian conservatories, you will witness a jazz improvisation conducted by Paolo Damiani, the famous Italian jazz cellist and double-bassist.
We also make special mention of Bravìo delle Botti at Montepulciano (Siena), on Sunday, August 31, an original competition between the 8 “contrade” (districts). The contestants for each contrada push huge botti (wooden wine barrels) along the streets of the historical center to win the Bravio, a painted cloth banner depicting the city’s patron saint.

Extraordinary opening of the Chiostro Grande, Santa Maria Novella. The cloister is located in the complex of Santa Maria Novella, which has housed the Scuola Marescialli e Brigadieri dei Carabinieri since 1920. Built in the fourteenth century thanks to the generosity of certain noble Florentine families, the cloister is decorated with a cycle of frescoes depicting the stories of St. Dominic and other Dominican saints, produced from 1570 to 1590 by over fifteen different painters of the Academy. Lunch at ZAP, Zona Aromatica Protetta (Protected Aromatic Area). Opening on May 20, Zap is the new green heart of Florence: recovery of green space, cultural cooperation, and youth projects are the three elements that characterize this area. Travels to the East at Casa Martelli. Photography exhibition by Carlo Martelli (1850–1945) purchased during his travels in the Holy Land and the Orient. The photographs come from Alexandria, Cairo Port Said, Jaffa, and hallowed sites of the Holy Land including Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. A number of photos from northern Africa are also on display. The collection of photographs perfectly portrays the exotic fascination Europe had for Africa. Until October 31, 2014.
