Dan Brown’s new novel: Origin

October 14, 2017Leave a commentMiscellany

Origin is the 2017 science-fiction mystery-thriller novel by American author Dan Brown and the fifth installment in his Robert Langdon series, following Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, and Inferno.

Origin by Dan Brown

The novel was released on October 3, 2017, by Doubleday, the American publishing company founded as Doubleday & McClure Company in 1897 that by 1947 was the largest in the United States. It was released in Italy concurrently with the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Spain, and many other countries.

The plot introduces the great mystery that the reader will chase for all of the 500 and more pages. Dan Brown has set the new, exciting adventure of his most successful character, Robert Langdon, in the iconic frames of Bilbao, Barcelona, and Madrid, among art masterpieces, historic buildings, classic texts, and enigmatic symbols.

Offering a brilliant reflection on the eternal conflict between science and faith, and the challenges that new technologies and artificial intelligence force us to confront daily, Origin is a novel rich in narrative insights and inventions, in which past and future meet in a surprising contemporary setting.

The Plot

Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever.”

The evening’s host is his friend and former student, Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old tech magnate whose dazzling inventions and audacious predictions have made him a controversial figure around the world. Kirsch compares himself to Jesus Christ for inventing a computer program that rescued the European Union from bankruptcy.
Kirsch has also already had an audience with Christian, Muslim, and Jewish leaders, claiming to have made a discovery that will destroy the foundations of their religions.

He now plans to unveil this discovery at the Guggenheim, claiming that he will reveal an astonishing scientific breakthrough to challenge the fundamentals of human existence…one that will answer two of the fundamental questions of human existence.

But Langdon and several hundred other guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is blown apart before Kirsch’s precious discovery can be revealed. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape, along with the museum’s director, Ambra Vidal, who was a girlfriend of the Prince of Spain.
She collaborated with Kirsch to prepare the provocative event.
Vidal and Langdon flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret.

In their path lie dark forces that will do anything to stop them. To evade a tormented enemy who is one step ahead of them at every turn, Langdon and Vidal must navigate labyrinthine passageways of hidden history and ancient religion.
On a trail marked only by enigmatic symbols and elusive modern art, Langdon and Vidal uncover the clues that will bring them face-to-face with Kirsch’s shocking discovery . . . and the breathtaking truth that has long eluded us.
