Conference Rosso and Pontormo at The British Institute of Florence. This full-day conference accompanies the Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino exhibition hosted by Palazzo Strozzi and promises to delve deep into the reasons and motivations behind the painters’ unique style. Original-language movies at Cinema Odeon. Also on that afternoon, Saving Mr. Banks, the 2013 American-Australian-British biographical comedy-drama film directed by John Lee Hancock from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Musical drama Valjean at Teatro Lumiere directed by Fulvio Crivello. Jean Valjean is a fictional character and the protagonist of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel Les Misérables. Replication on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m. Ticket price: € 18/15.

Exhibition Cortona. L’Alba dei Principi Etruschi at Museo Archeologico Nazionale until July 31, 2014. The exhibition offers to take visitors 2,700 years in the past to the dawn of the Etruscan civilization. It includes the burial items from the necropolis of Sodo and other unusual items from archaeological sites in the environs of Cortona. Visiting hours: Monday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. Ticket price: € 4.

Documentary Exhibition “Culture and Sculptures” Sculptures of Pazzagli and “Pinocchio around the world” at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, until May 7, 2014. Thirty-two bronze sculptures of which seven are dedicated to Pinocchio, the fictional character and main protagonist of the children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the Italian author Carlo Collodi.

Exhibition Baccio Bandinelli Sculptor and Teacher (1493 to 1560) at Museo Nazionale del Bargello until July 13, 2014. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, bronzes, and medals. The opening of the Middle East Now Festival, from April 9 until April 14, 2014. A week of screenings, exhibitions and events throughout the City of Florence dedicated to Middle East culture. The festival opens with the screening of the film The Deep by Haider Rashid at Cinema Odeon at 8:45 p.m. with the director and the Ambassador of Iraq SE Saywan Barzani in attendance. The dream of a young Iraqi to become a football player is threatened by the daily life of a country ravaged by violence, until he decides to run away from it all. The film is presented with Italian and English subtitles.

Festival of sacred music at Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. Inaugurating the 18th edition of the festival of sacred music with famous notes of sacred music, The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross by Haydn alternating with readings of passages in the Gospel and sacred texts on the topic. Cardinal Archbishop Giuseppe Betori introduces Fabrizio Gifuni, a successful Italian actor, reciting the words of John Donne, Mario Luzi, Giovanni Papini, and the theologian Karl Rahner. Film screening Muscle Shoals by Gregg “Freddy” Camalie at Cinema Spazio Alfieri. (USA 2013). Muscle Shoals is the recording studio from which arose the most famous Soul and Rock songs of the 60’s and 70’s. The film retraces the history of the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and the atmosphere of those years.

Exhibition History and events of the graphic collection in the Uffizi before the age of globalisation (1848-1918) – Prints and Drawings at Galleria degli Uffizi until May 4, 2014. The exhibiton covers a period between the post-Napoleonic revolutions and the end of World War I. Visiting hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 8:15 a.m. until 6:50 p.m. Ticket price: € 6,50.
Middle East Now Festival at Cinema Odeon and Auditorium Stensen until April 14, 2014. A festival of films, documentaries, visual arts, photography, contemporary culture, food, and events on the Middle East and North Africa. A week of screenings, exhibitions, and events throughout the City of Florence. Also on that evening at Cinema Odeon tasting Falafelism – Tutti pazzi per le falafel + screening of the film His Name by H. Fakhroo, an exploration of an unexpected friendship between a Qatari woman and the man who cleans the streets of her neighbourhood. One day, she finally decides to ask his name. The film is presented with Italian and English subtitles. Starting at 8 p.m. Ticket price: tasting and film screening € 15.
