This week we make special mention of the Ferragosto Festivities happening in Florence. Ferragosto, or Assumption Day, is celebrated on August 15 and is both one of the most important Catholic holidays as well as a pagan anniversary dating
back to the Roman Empire. In Italy, people traditionally take their holidays during
this month. Fortunately, most of the museums, tourist attractions, and restaurants in
the historic center of Florence remain open.
We must also make special mention of the Feast of San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence) on August 10. St Lawrence is the co-patron saint of Florence. Every year on this feast day, there is an outdoor celebration in Piazza San Lorenzo.
August 10 is also known as the Night of San Lorenzo, or the Night of the
Shooting Stars, when, according to tradition, dreams come true. You can make a wish every time you see a falling star!
