Inferno Glossary Part 3
Here you will find the last part of a brief glossary of terms, names, and characters often mentioned in Dan Brown’s novel Inferno.
Sinskey, Elisabeth: She has been the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the past 10 years. Two years ago, she travelled from Geneva to New York to give a speech before the United Nations. She is called to the Council On Foreign Relations just before she has to go back to Switzerland. Sinskey makes it her most important task to locate Bertrand Zobrist, and even though the latter has paid the Provost to keep his hiding place secret, she succeeds in finding him. According to the Provost, Sinskey drove him to suicide. She confiscates the object from Zobrist´s deposit box.
The Consortium: A group of individuals or organizations that collaborate to achieve a common goal. It is a powerful organization that works for the Provost and provides services to his clients.
The Provost: He is the manager of the Consortium, which provides services for people who would like to disappear for a while. He delivers the services that the customers demand without asking questions. He has received a task from Sienna Brooks, who has recommended Bertrand Zobrist to get protection from the Consortium against Elisabeth Sinskey and the WHO. Through Vayentha, he tries to win Robert Langdon over to his side. However, since that operation is unsuccesful, the Consortium has to make it seem like somebody is hunting Langdon. Throughout the book, the Provost has to break protocol after seeing the video that Zobrist wished to be released on a specific date.
The Shadow, also known as Bertrand Zobrist: He is a customer of the Consortium, of which the Provost is the manager. In the beginning of the book, he throws himself off the Badia Tower after having run along the banks of the Arno, turning left onto Via dei Castellani, walking in the shadows of the Uffizi, passing the palace, and sneaking by Piazza di San Firenze. He crosses the street before Bargello and turns west toward Badia. He stops before an iron gate by the foot of some stairs, but climps to the top of Badia and jumps off. It turns out that he is Bertrand Zobrist, who at the beginning of the book speaks to FS 2080, who is standing in the square in which stands the tower, before jumping.
Vayentha: She is an employee of the Consortium hired by the Provost. She is hunting Robert Langdon throughout Florence, apparently to kill him, but she is not shooting with real bullets. Her task is to get the object that Langdon possesses. She tries to get hold of it at Nuovo Ospedale Di San Giovanni In Dio, in Sienna´s apartment, and in Palazzo Vecchio, where she falls through the roof off the Hall of the 500.
Venci, Giorgio: He is chief designer in the shop Atelier Pietro Longhi in Venice, which sells historical costumes, wigs, and accessories. He is a member of the transhumanistic movement and helps Sienna get a private jet to Istanbul.
Vio, Ettore: He is curator at the museum in St. Marks basilica in Venice. He once worked with Langdon on a documentary about the Church. He helps Langdon by telling him which doge once severed the heads from the horses.
Zobrist, Bertrand: He is a billionaire who has paid for Dante´s death mask, but has let it remain in Palazzo Vecchio. He has insisted on it being there himself, if the cabinet were open. He is a famous biochemist who has made a lot of money on patents. He has said some harsh things about population growth and overpopulation. He is a proponent of the Population Apocalypse Equation, which predicts that the current trend can have no outcome other than the collapse of society. Bertand Zobrist took his own life in the beginning of the book by throwing himself off of the Badia tower. Throughout the book Langdon realizes that Zobrist is a criminal who has created a dangerous plague that will kill many people. He has bought services from the Provost so that nobody would be able to find out where he is located, especially Elisabeth Sinskey, who after meeting him at the Council On Foreign Relations in USA will do anything to catch him. Sinskey is pursuing Zobrist so fiercely that he has to commit suicide. Sinskey manages to open his deposit box and then confiscate the object that holds information about the hiding place of the virus.
