Inferno Glossary Part 3
Here you will find the first part of a brief glossary of terms, names, and characters often mentioned in Dan Brown’s novel Inferno.
Alvarez, Marta: Pregnant art and cultural administrator at Palazzo Vecchio. She meets Langdon in the Hall of the 500. She met Langdon the day before together with Ignazio Busoni.
Analytic: Female employee at The Provost’s company. She tells her boss that Robert Langdon has checked his private mail account from an unsecured IP address.
Brooks, Sienna, aka FS2080: Currently working as a doctor at Nuovo Ospedale Di San Giovanni In Dio in Florence. She takes care of Robert Langdon. She was originally a star as a young child in her home country of England, where she starred in Shakespeare’s A Midsummernight’s Dream. She is in Italy with a fake work permit. She has always felt different and learned how to read at a very young age. As a 7 year old, she had diagnosed herself with a deep depression. Her parents took her to a psychiatrist who convinced her that instead of worrying about herself she should care for other people and help those in need. She therefore went with a humanitarian group to the Philippines where she experienced the overpopulation of Manilla, the most densely populated city in the world. For every person she was helping there were hundreds of others who were starving. She witnessed poverty, traffic jams, pollution, sex trafficking of children, and many other things that made her realize that when people become desperate they behave like animals. She is almost raped when she is attacked by 3 men, but is saved by a deaf, elderly woman with a knife. She goes home without saying goodbye to the others in the group.
For a couple of years she is employed at The Provost, who benefits from her language skills and intelligence. She starts to lose her hair because of stress and eventually has to shave it all off and replace it with a wig. She discovers the articles of Bertrand Zobrist and becomes a fan. She informs The Provost that she no longer wishes to stay employed but to save the world. She takes Bertrand Zobrist to The Provost where he becomes a client. At the same time, she changes her name to FS 2080 after the code of Fereidoun M. Esfandiary. She met Bertrand Zobrist six years earlier in Chicago, where had to fight her way through a blizzard on the Magnificent Mile to attend a lecture by Zobrist. Because of the blizzard, there were not many listeners. Afterwards, Zobrist invited all the attendees for drinks at his hotel nearby. When she and Zobrist were left alone, Zobrist invited her for a drink in his room, and they started a relationship. Sienna becomes Zobrist’s lover and disciple. When Zobrist commits suicide from the Badia Tower, she is standing in the square. In the novel, we meet her for the first time when the Shadow (Zobrist) is talking to her in the introduction.
Brüder, Cristoph: Agent and employee at ECDC (EU agency whose aim is to strengthen Europe’s defenses against infectious diseases) working on a task for Elizabeth Sinskey. They have to find the dangerous virus that Bertrand Zobrist has hid in a secret place.
Busoni, Ignazio: Also called Il Duomino because of his weight of around 200 kilograms. For ages he has been the manager of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which has an art collection with original pieces made for the cathedral in Florence.
CDC contact: Friend of Brüder, working at CDC in Atlanta, USA. He informs Brüder that the virus has already made it to the USA.
Collins: Apparently the consul general’s chief administrator at the American consulat, but is really an employee of The Provost. He receives a call from Robert Langdon and informs The Provost about his whereabouts.
Docent: Guard at the Baptistery in Florence. He accepts 500$ and lets Jonathan Ferris into the baptistry before opening hours.
Esfandiary, Fereidoun M.: Transhumanist who changed his name to FM 2030. FM for the initials in his name, and 2030 for the year when he would have turned 100 years old. His working goal was for man to be able to live up to 100 years. While he died of cancer at the age of 70, many have shown their sympathy for Esfandiary by copying his manner of name change, such as FS 2080.
Faulkman, Jonas: Editor in the book business and good friend of Robert Langdon. When Langdon needs help, he provides Langdon with a private jet to take him from Florence to Geneva to hide his intensions of going to Venice.
